Character Development Activity -Have students form small groups and brain storm different types of character archetypes.

Homework: Find passages of character development/ or spatial or temporal setting from Hound of the Baskervilles - Be prepared to easily find and reference these passages tomorrow.

3/21 - Setting - Spatial/Temporal


What we did in class:

1)Discussed and reviewed setting.
Temporal/Spatial (time & space)

2) Discussed how to write "Show not tell"
  example : tell - The room was large and dark.
                  show - As I entered the room, the sound of my feet echoed as I walked across the floor of the room; with out light to guide my way I had no idea how far the expanse would reach.

3) Students wrote about their favorite place to read.

4) Students discussed their writing.

5) Class discussed places which might make a good setting for a scene of a mystery story.

6) Students wrote about this place using temporal and spatial descriptors.

7) work was read and discussed.

Have a good springbreak.

3/19-20 - Introduction to Narrative Writing/Mystery - The Speckled Band


What we did in class:
  • We discussed the upcoming unit concerning Narrative Writing / Mystery.
  • We talked about how this unit will allow the class to participate in daily writing activities.
  • These writing activities will be low stakes writing and will help students develop the skill of simply committing their thoughts to paper. 
  • We began to discuss what is needed to develop a Narrative.
    • Setting Temporal/Spatial (time/space)
    • Developed Characters
    • Plot (5 elements)
      • Conflict
      • Rising Action
      • Climax
      • Falling Action
      • Resolution
    • Foreshadowing/ Red Herring/ Clues
    • Symbols 
  • YuWe listened to "The Adventures of the Speckled Band" and read along.
  • We discussed the story
